Orchids' Glory!!!

WOW finally after a number of years of missing the Manitoba Orchid Society (MOS) annual show and competition I was thrilled to take the morning away from stitching and before the so-called snow storm arrives in Winnipeg and drool at all the awesome displays!!! And I think Joan H had a wall quilt with mega orchid fabrics within in competition and someone else a beautiful stained glass orchid piece and a few photographs and paintings too. Yes, I miss this too!

Okay, here are a few photos to whet your appetite and maybe if you're in Winnipeg you will zip over to the Assiniboine Park Conservatory tomorrow before they close for another year!

These are not "living" items, the first two are the leather brooch and then a clay formed orchid plant in basket fridge magnet which I could not resist to add both to my collection. And the lovely wall quilt I could not resist a pic of.

Another BLOOM

GOSH it was -44C with the windchill this morning and warmed up a little through the day and here my Phal Jack Crawford orchid was in full bloom - WOW!!!

I think if it was me I'd have stayed in my bud as it's slightly chilly next to the windows - or maybe that's why it spiked and bloomed this year??? This baby is about 2" across and a lovely majenta colour and I know it hadn't bloomed for a few years now!

Orchids Blooming!

I just don't believe it, but in this frigid temps outside and kinda coolish inside as I don't like the smell of heat or the clanking water pipes (and it's cooler by the windows too) I've one that bloomed last month (Phal equestris) and again it's shooting out more buds and I've another plant (Phal Jack Crawford) budding out too! AWESOME!

Hopefully it's not too cold and then I loose the buds before they open! Sure would LOVE to see these exotic type blooms gracing my drab apartment!
Right now it's -28C and feels like -41C with wind gusts to 31 KM/hr and tonight it's supposed to go down to -35C and feels like -47C with wind calming down to 15 KM/hr. Good thing I'm not venturing out tonight and from the looks of it tomorrow is not any better either but supposedly warming up for the weekend!!! BRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!

Another Orchid Blooming

Well just as my Phaleonopsis is dropping is blooms the spiking one is opening up! WOW talk about timing!

So Dendrobian Pixie Princess H R opened it's two 2" blooms on March 27th much to my surprise! This particular plant has not sprouted a spike in some 10 years and I just don't know why I've kept some of these this long with no benefit! LOL!

Another Orchid Spiking

WOW, I was watering my orchids this afternoon and noticed this stick sticking out of some dried up stems - was thinking of throwing this one out as it has not bloomed since I purchased it in 1998. Phew that's just about 10 years for this baby!

Well I had to search the web to see what it might look like and here it is. Kinda cute!

I wonder how long I'll have to wait till the spike buds out and blooms. Guess time will tell.

Orchid Update

WOW, I was quite pleased to check out my orchid and found these two blooms just waiting to be noticed - Pretty in Pink! See what I meant about the other picture a result of just opening from the bud stage? This is how the blooms are supposed to look - kinda flat with the throat out.

Orchid in BLOOM!

Well so much for keeping you updated on my orchid buds' progress to opening!!! I'm not sure when it grew so fast from the earlier picture to this one but it did! The larger bud is about the size of a walnut and the flower is about 2" X 3" right now - but may grow a bit yet when completely opened up. I guess I was so busy and then there was a period of not 100% so guess I just didn't pay much attention to it when watering - shame on me! Anyways here is the bloom I'd say just open maybe a couple of days as it's still in the cupped stage whereas it is more flat when opened completely. I'm hoping the tiny bud on the end continues to develop. This plant is due for 5-9 flowers in this cycle - at least I hope so!

OMGG I can do it!!!!

First off I have to say THANK YOU to Janet for this gift, I've thoroughly enjoyed this last hour reading the manual and experimenting with it! Oh what demons have you set free?

My heartbeat is just a racing but I'm smiling to beat the band! See I decided to make the time and read this manual and take a few pics and upload them if I could from the HP photosmart 320 digital camera my former boss gave me last night. WELLLLLLL (tonque in cheek) I just might have moved up into the realm of digital photography!!! LOL!

So here goes my first pics! These are of my phalaenopsis in spike and a fuzzy closeup too (gotta practice holding my breath and arm steady):

And now here is the Christmas stocking I received in the CdnQuiltSwappers Royal Treatment Swap from Joyce Hawkes - it was filled with much crazy patch fabrics and goodies along with angel ornaments, chocolates (just about gone now) and other nick nacks.

And here is a craft I made a few years ago from the office coffee cans and yes under the hat is the plastic lid and you can actually store things in there too - or hide pressies! Isn't he cute? I have one donated to the office too. This guy is mine and is on display all year round.

And next are three of the oil paintings that I've done under my sister Sylvia's very detailed tutelage and there's one set of three at the office (will take the camera to work and get them too). I think the poppies were first or the seals next but not sure and then the daisies along the fence and lastly the winter creek which needed much assistance when it came to the rocks - just too much for me to create.

Ooopsie, I forgot to post pics of the Singer Christmas ornaments that my sister Sylvia had painted for me.

Oh GOSH was this ever easy! And here I've been so petrified in buying myself a digital camera and spending money I don't have and then not learning how to use it! GO FIGURE!!!! No I'm not taking a picture of my goofy face from realizing my silliness on this adventure. LOL!

Orchid is in SPIKE!!!

OH MY, OH MY, it's been a while since I've had an orchid in bloom, especially a phaleonopsis!!! And talk about perfect timing to perk up this silly blue person!

This is one of the old faithfuls and I was debating if it ever was going to bloom again or should I give up on it! Well guess it proved me wrong! Now hopefully I'll see the blooms too! Yes, I'll keep you posted on the spikes progress and when it finally blooms I'll naturally post the pic too!

Well I've finally gotten another postcard swap mailed (a few days late - sorry no pic as yet) and ideas clammering for another two swaps so guess I better get a move on and get them started so I can work on my long awaited for Chain of Hearts in the new year, especially when I just purchased a nice colour selection of EdMar rayon threads at 30% off. I've also a friend's crazy patch 12.5" block to finish embellishing hopefully for Christmas - guess I better get moving on that one! Apparently mine is coming along very well and should be posted soon - YIKES!!!

Oh and my Hardanger Christmas ornaments are coming along very nicely and tonight I think I learn a few more new stitches and some finishing too. Also my Hardanger Angel problem has been solved and it looks not bad since we changed the stitches and dropped the picots!!! Gosh they gave my grief and I hear others too, so now I don't feel too badly! Yep will post pics once completed.

My First Posting

Well here goes! I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into but many have noted that I should write a book on my sewing and life-in-general adventures. See, many say my group emails are so life like that one can just picture it all happening! Hmmm, not sure how to take that, but it's now being channelled into this BLOG - not quite the "book" they suggested! I can tell you that I love my crazy patch and this is my first embellished heart block that I prepared and then it went into my satellite group's small RR and came back to me bringing a huge smile to my face and heart along with a label signed by my fellow quilters. Oh yes I've done more than just crazy patch, but paper piecing gives me major grief and strip or basic piecing drives me mad when it does not measure up as required! I do have my "first" completed quilt top and hopefully soon it will be quilted by my sister. I also have a half dozen quilt tops in various stages of UFO kingdom!!!

Lately I've delved into fabric postcards and naturally they are crazy patched and embellished with beads, silk ribbons, buttons, yarn and braids etc. My first ones were just rectanglar crazy patched and embellished but the latter set are these hearts and framed with this textured upholstery fabric in various colours to match. My friend printed off some of my own design fabric backs and VOILA my PCs.

Since then I think I'm doomed as I could stitch till 2:00 or 3:00 am without a thought of anything else - even food - and then up at 6:30 am to start the work day full of computer number crunching. Oh and the past 3-4 years I've worked part time on top of the full time office work for Lewiscraft (recently bankrupt) now Bentley's Liquidation. There are times when I don't know how I do it and then I think what will I do when I'm not rushing to and fro when I do give up the part time job! LOL!

Much to the dismay of my poor badly neglected orchids! Here is one of my faithfuls that blooms just about yearly and this one time a double bloom on the one spike - WOW! This baby is a Paphiopedlium Magic Flame and shoud be spiking soon again. It's a shame that my apartment environment does not agree that well with plants or me but the location is great in regards to work so I's a staying put at least until I retire.

Okay, I'm not sure how this BLOG is going to proceed but guess time will tell.
