The Murray River at Mildura

At Mildura, Victoria situated on the banks of the Murray River.  Here we have a man on the left fishing and the bridge called the George Chaffey Bridge.

Silver City Highway is 688 km long...this is just a small part of the road past Mildura.

The map shows Tasmania at the bottom and the marker shows Mildura NSW.

Houseboats

River Murray at Echuca, Victoria and a few house boats, some worst for wear.
We found a place which was a small area to stand and take these photos.  Once again it was a Sunday so no one around late in the afternoon.

There is a train up there somewhere, we couldn't get to see it because the gate was locked.

Have no idea what these tall 'things' are - to me just decoration.

Echuca, Victoria

From Wodonga we drove across to Echuca through farmland, a beautiful drive for the day.
Echuca is a town on the banks of the Murray River and Campaspe River in Victoria.  The border town of Moama is adjacent on the northern side of the Murray River in NSW.
Echuca is the administrative centre for the area.  Population is about 15,000 people and combined with Moama just over 21,000 people.

Echuca is a popular tourist place, you can catch a paddle steamer to go for a cruise up the Murray River, unfortunately these days you can't get to see a paddle steamer from the banks.

The photos are of a small part of the Murray River which is rather dirty and you can see the level of water is down.

To Tamworth then Wellington, NSW

On our way up north in Winter 2017 we stayed at Tamworth for a couple of nights...the link is [here]

On our way back we stayed in a different Caravan Park, the bats were gone and below is a small old caravan in excellent order plus the car is old.

Then a photo of our caravan and 4 wheel drive in a rest area in NSW.

Called to get some diesel and behind the service station where trucks park as a rest area was this mess!  Most unusual to see such a disgraceful mess.

Arrived in Wellington NSW mid afternoon and the river is the Macquarie River then we saw this little caravan - how quaint is that!

Murray River at Mannum, South Australia

Have returned from my short break and now continuing with the holiday of last year.

The Murray River is 2508 km long, (1,558 miles) is the longest River in Australia.
The Murray rises in the Australian Alps, draining the western side of Australia's highest mountains, and then meanders across Australia's inland plains, forming the border between the states of New South Wales and Victoria as it flows to the northwest into South Australia. It turns south at  [Morgan] for its final 315 klms (196 mi), reaching the ocean at Lake Alexandrina.

The water of the Murray flows through several terminal lakes that fluctuate in salinity (and were often fresh until recent decades) including Lake Alexandrina and The Coorong before emptying through the Murray Mouth into the southeastern portion of the Indian Ocean, often referenced on Australian maps as the Southern Ocean, near Goolwa. Despite discharging considerable volumes of water at times, particularly before the advent of largescale river regulation, the mouth has always been comparatively small and shallow.
As of 2010, the Murray River system receives 58 percent of its natural flow.  It is perhaps Australia's most important irrigated region, and it is widely known as the food bowl of the nation.

More information on the Murray River.

The Murray River is also used for many things, irrigation, River Cruising, fishing, water skiing and so on.  Of course not in all places.

From the lookout.

The Caravan Park at Mannum.  It's very busy in spring, summer, autumn, and holiday time.
In winter when we were there last year, no one about.  That's our caravan and we were so lucky to be parked right on the bank of the Murray River.

Below is the PS Marion built in 1897,  provides a unique opportunity to experience the thrills and mysteries of the golden years of the river boats. Undertaking short cruises throughout the year on the Murray River departing from Mary Ann Reserve in Mannum, PS Marion also conducts overnight passenger cruises, including the acclaimed Rockford Steam Powered Dinners as well as being available for private charter cruises.
Visitors are welcome to view PS Marion whilst she is moored at her home at Arnold Park Wharf (museum opening times) including inspection of the galley, dining room, lounges and cabin accommodation.

The Barge, there are two, one for large vehicles the other for smaller ones.  These two barges go across the Murray River at Mannum 24/7

Thoughts on Mildura, Victoria.

Mildura is a reasonably large rural town where 80% of Victoria's grapes are grown

Having been to Mildura a few times before we were disappointed this time.
The Murray River access has been taken away, was only permitted if going on a Paddle Steamer. The photo below is all we could see of the river.
No where to park to walk along the river's edge and no paths to walk along - totally different and ruined in our opinion. There were a few things that were improved.
So we only stayed two nights.

The town itself was ok as we did some driving around.
There was a Caravan Show on so we tried to find it, and did.  However on the way we ended up at the Cemetery, so had to have a look.

I love these gumtrees and their orange/brown trunks.  This was at the Cemetery.

An old Homestead not used now, but it's a museum.

The loo that's not used anymore for the homestead.

A shearing shed, a reconstructed one.

Across the Murray River!

We are currently in Burra, South Australia (SA) spending one night.

I was amused at the Driver of the Ferry across the Murray River in SA at a place called Morgan.  As he steers the ferry he reads his phone, the photo was captured looking through the windscreen of the vehicle.  The other photo of a bird was taken on the Murray way down the road at Renmark in SA.
We are heading North.

Later this week I'm going to post a few maps with the distance and where we intend to go.
