West Side of the Tamar

The West side of the Tamar River in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.  It's a muddy place when the tide is out.  These shots were taken recently on one of our trips to buy some Strawberries from the farm.

The last two photos you can see the Windermere Church is the distance on the otherside (eastern side) of the river, a link to the church.

Floods

Interesting to note whilst doing a direct branch of my family tree I discovered that part of my heritage is French - well I never!  Getting the DNA done in Texas, USA, results soon.

Down to business regarding the floods we have had here in the Northern area and North Western area of the Island.  A few people lost their homes but of course these floods were not as bad as the floods in the State of Victoria, Australia.  Where we live it rained but seeing as we live on a hill we were ok, no water even under the house but that's the way it's always been.

I've a few photos and video which I took this past week. Video yes I have some but the one I'm showing today was put together by someone, thought it was done well so hence sharing.  I did a post on the Trevallyn Dam recently showing a video, well this video below has much more water going over it and it's a video of various places within the Launceston area. 2 minutes and 8 second.

This is on the other side of where I live in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia and it's mostly farmland that has flooded.

The Circus was in town and they nearly got flooded but were spared.  You can see the top of the big tent.  Dirty water in the middle of the photo rushing/gushing down to the Tamar River from the Cataract Gorge.

The Tamar

The Rosevears, Hotel over looking the Tamar River, they apparently have a good meal.
Not sure how the video will be as it's not landscape.

Along the Tamar

A drive the other day down to the Tamar River here in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.  It was a beautiful Spring Day and the water was calm.
There is a Hotel in a place called Rosevears over looking the Tamar River excellent meals I believe and many people gather to eat there.  Picnic tables across from the Hotel and you can catch a ferry and go for a little ride on the river.
Many years ago my husband and myself along with another couple water skied in this area. In those days I didn't have a camera!

Down by the River

Daylight saving here from yesterday, Sunday the clock went 1 hour forward, we do love daylight saving in this house.

These photos were taken in winter late in the evening - they are of the Tamar River which is about 70km long and is classed as an estuary.  To see the Tamar River from Launceston, Tasmania Australia (my home town/city) it's just about a 5 minute drive from the city or you can walk to it.  There are a couple of parks nearby.

To George Town

Back to The Tamar River and George Town, Tasmania. Australia.
Stopped to take a shot of the river plus the Batman Bridge from the side of the road.  The bridge is that white thing in the middle of the photo.
George Town is on the Eastern side of the Tamar River and at the mouth of the river.  It's a much tidier town than it used to be, new buildings and a big play area for the children are being redone.
Once a fast a wave piercing Catamaran ferry sailed from George Town to Sydney, Port Welshpool to be exact but that trip was abandoned after several sails due to loss of income and sea sickness. The ferry was called the 'Devil Cat' which was built in our State Capital, Hobart by Incat who have built many catamarans and sold them to overseas buyers.
There are a few photos of the Devil Cat online in Google images.

North of Hillwood

A little regarding the Tamar River here in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia.
The Tamar River is a 70 kilometer estuary located in northern area of the Island Tasmania.  Despite being called a river, the waterway is a brackish and tidal estuary over it's entire length.
Some photos taken near Hillwood and north of with my Canon DSLR camera.
The first photo is the bridge which we drove over on the other side, the Western side.
Last photo you can see the Batman Bridge which we drove over after going to George Town on the Eastern side.

Down Hillwood Way

More photos from another place along the Tamar River here in Launceston, Tasmania Australia.
This area is at Hillwood where many, many strawberries are grown and other fruit in summer.
Discovered this little beach, yes that's sand believe it or not in the first photo. It's amazing how clean the river is at this point.

Down the East Side

The Tamar River is a tidal river here in Launceston.  It's not a pretty river when the tide is out due to silt.
We went for a drive the other day, it was rather a cool morning after lots of rain so I made lunch and we took off for a drive, firstly down the eastern side then the part of the western side of the Tamar River.

These photos were taken with my phone and I'm very pleased with them.

Tamar River, Launceston

Haven't finished our days trips but had to post these two photos taken last evening of the Tamar River on such a beautiful winters day.
This area is about 5 minutes walk from the city centre of Launceston.
The second photo there are two bridges to cope with the traffic for those people who live on the other side of the river.
There is a lovely park over that fence on the right along with a skate park and this side a playground for children, carpark, toilet block and a nice walk along to Home Point where one can catch the ferry that takes you up the Tamar River for a tour.
Years ago we used to hop in the ski-boat and go ourselves.

The second photo, there are two bridges to take the traffic across to the other side of the river.

The Flood, Launceston, Tasmania.

Lovely weather for the Ducks.  Came across this one whilst travelling around Launceston to view the water from the flood.

Some of my followers may know that Launceston and some surrounding areas have been in a bad flood.  In summer we were crying for it to rain, water was low to supply power, diesel generators were brought in and now they are able to return back to where they came from, now that lots of rain has fallen.
This rain didn't fall in Launceston but up in other areas thus flowing into two rivers that meet here in Launceston and coupled with a high tide all at the same time causes major flooding.  This time however, the high tide was at a different time when the water came gushing through.

Our city knew of this delima  should it happen again (last time was 1929) so levees were built over time and finished last year.  They worked!

2 people are missing still.
Cattle/sheep lost in the country areas.
Houses flooded in some low lying areas.
The list goes on.

Yesterday we headed off into the city, to take some photo.
Firstly going to the Trevallyn Dam, a long time since water has been over it.

Part of the Tamar River, wider than normal.

Headed to the Tamar River near the city.  Tamar Yacht Club on the left, and the water came up to the level of the far seat.
Lower photo of the same area.

Next door to the Yacht Club is this restaurant which is very popular.  It was flooded as we looked in the window.

Looking from the walkway at the Yacht Club is a pontoon, all the rubbish of logs and so on can clearly be seen.

To the right of the Yacht Club is Kings Park it's hear that one can go for a lovely walk. Where the lamp light is on the left of the tree, well that is the footpath.
On the right beyond the green grass is a brick wall with steps with the skate park behind it.
The below imagine gives some idea of the extra width of the Tamar River.

This is the King's Bridge and that little house is the gateway for a walk up the Gorge.

This is another bridge that goes over the river next to the King's Bridge.

The water coming down the Gorge.

Tranquil times on the Tamar [ here ] and [ here ]
