Auckland says farewell to H.E. Carmelo Barbarello, Ambassador of Italy

On Monday 5th September we said goodbye to H.E. Carmelo Barbarello, Ambassador of Italy, leaving his post and New Zealand to return to Rome.

The Ambassador organised an aperitif at the Northern Club, were Italians and Kiwis from Auckland mingled and had a last chance to say farewell. During his two years in New Zealand Carmelo Barbarello managed to do so much for our community and everyone present was sad to see him leave. We will also miss his warm personality and readiness to help.

For the occasion the Ambassador was also presented with a traditional Sardinia nuptial bread by the visiting delegation of Luna Nuova (you will be able to learn more about these breads during this free lecture on 21 September, and during a special exhibition at the Festival Italiano).

The Dante Alighieri Society of Auckland wishes all the best to Carmelo Barbarello in his future postings in Rome and overseas, and we look forward to meet the new Ambassador at the Festival Italiano on 25th September.

Festa della Repubblica concert with Maestro Christian Leotta

Christian Leotta is a native of Catania, Italy, and now lives in Como. He studied with Mario Patuzzi at Milan’s Conservatory, at the Theo Lieven International Piano Foundation on Lake Como and at the Tureck Bach Research Foundation of Oxford, England.

Appearing in Montreal in 2002, at the age of only 22, Leotta is the youngest pianist since the youthful Daniel Barenboim ever to undertake a recital series encompassing the entire corpus of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas. Following the extraordinary success of his live performances, in 2007 Atma Classique signed him to record the entire corpus of the 32 Piano Sonatas in a collection of five two-CD sets, released between 2008 and 2014.

The international press hailed him as "one of the major Beethoven soloists of our time" (Pizzicato, Luxembourg). His affinity to Beethoven's music has been unanimously recognized thanks to "his prodigious technique used to better express the poetry of Beethoven’s music" (The Whole Note, Toronto).

Christian Leotta has worked with major orchestras such as the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Italian RAI National Television Orchestra, the Milan Symphony Orchestra “Giuseppe Verdi”, regularly performing in important theatres and concert halls world-wide.

Below some photos of the Italian reception after the concert, with Prosecco San Leo, Birra Peroni, Parmigiano Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma. Thank you to the Italian Embassy and Ambassador Carmelo Barbarello for a wonderful evening.
