Il corso di scrittura creativa è iniziato in bellezza con un primo incontro dedicato all’ambientazione. Da dove si parte per creare il setting di una storia? Come cambiano le descrizioni nei diversi generi narrativi? Come si comunica, oggi, un’atmosfera?
Insieme a Barbara ed Elia, gli studenti si sono prima di tutto immersi nella lettura e nell’ascolto di brani scelti della letteratura italiana. Dal “quel ramo del lago di Como, che volge a mezzogiorno, tra due catene non interrotte di monti” hanno veleggiato fino alla “solitaria e selvaggia Mompracem (…) il cui nome bastava in quei tempi a spargere il terrore a cento leghe all'intorno”. Hanno riso per le “malagrazie”, gli “sbrodeghezzi” e i “potacci” del lessico familiare di Natalia Ginzburg e, con un po’ di amarezza, per il call center descritto come un gulag svizzero da Michela Murgia. Poi hanno seguito i passi di Igiaba Scego lungo i ricordi rimossi della Roma coloniale e si sono improvvisamente ritrovati ad annusare la puzza di Milano, una città che “non è adatta ai dilettanti”, secondo il noirista Sandrone Dazieri.
Dopodiché è arrivato il momento di rompere il ghiaccio con la scrittura! Come? Stimolando tutti e cinque i sensi per viaggiare con l’immaginazione e il cuore fino in Italia. Così, gli studenti hanno annusato il rosmarino, immerso le mani nei maccheroni crudi, assaporato un pomodorino acerbo, ascoltato il suono delle campane e le voci di un mercato. Le sensazioni evocano ricordi, stimolano la fantasia e diventano trampolini per le storie. “Da bambino mio padre mi diceva di piantare verdura e frutta: i fiori non servono a niente”. “Il pezzo di agnello è seduto grasso e pallido come la vecchia che lo cucinerà ”. “Un pomodoro che non sa di nulla, per quanto bello, non è un pomodoro”. “Le campane suonano, è domenica, la messa è finita, andate in pace”. “Le campane suonano, la guerra è finita”.
Infine, dopo una bella merenda, Barbara ed Elia hanno guidato gli appassionati e talentuosi studenti nella creazione dell’ambientazione per quella che sarà la loro… “Storia in Italia”! Dove sarà ambientata? E in che periodo? Beh, questa, per voi lettori, è una sorpresa che non possiamo ancora svelare!

First Workshop: The setting
The creative writing course started off splendidly with a first session dedicated to setting. Where do you begin when creating the setting for a story? How do descriptions vary across different narrative genres? How do you convey atmosphere in today’s writing?
Together with Barbara and Elia, the students first immersed themselves in reading and listening to selected passages from Italian literature. From “that branch of the Lake of Como, which turns toward the south between two unbroken chains of mountains”, they sailed to the “solitary and wild Mompracem (…) whose name alone was enough in those times to spread terror a hundred leagues around”. They laughed at Natalia Ginzburg’s family sayings, and with a touch of bitterness, Michela Murgia’s depiction of a call center as a Swiss gulag. They then followed in the footsteps of Igiaba Scego through the suppressed memories of colonial Rome and suddenly found themselves smelling the stench of Milan, a city that “is not suitable for amateurs”, according to noir writer Sandrone Dazieri.
Then it was time to break the ice with writing! How? By engaging all five senses to travel with imagination and heart to Italy. The students smelled rosemary, dipped their hands into raw macaroni, tasted an unripe tomato, listened to the sound of church bells and the voices of a market. Sensations evoke memories, stimulate imagination, and become springboards for stories. “As a child, my father used to tell me to plant vegetables and fruit: flowers are useless”. “The piece of lamb is sitting fat and pale like the old woman who will cook it”. “A tomato that tastes of nothing, however beautiful, is not a tomato”. “The bells are ringing, it’s Sunday, the mass is over, go in peace”. “The bells are ringing; the war is over”.
Finally, after a delightful coffee break, Barbara and Elia guided the enthusiastic and talented students in crafting the setting for what will become their… “Story in Italy”! Where will it be set? And in what period? Well, for you readers, that’s a surprise we cannot reveal just yet!
