Still occupied. Yes, the housing shortage is getting worse.

Get back on track

Boat sails through the churn lock (Kolksluis)  toward the Y. The first use of this lock dates back to 1425 with a modification in 1431 and the last refurbishment in 1986.

Tubular piles foundation

The day before yesterday, after visiting the world press photo exhibition (which really doesn't make you happy), I was walking through town and saw that on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal they had started installing quay reinforcements by means of tubular piles that are installed vibration-free in the ground by drilling. There should be one at every mark on the quay masonry.

On the other propped but not yet handled side, a heron sat undisturbed fishing for food totally unimpressed by the violence in front of him. (Header a photo one corner further away.)

In any case, it is a very different canal face as usual.

From the archive "Thinking citizens"

The quay wall is collapsing, well then this can be added too.

Boat Watching

Well what all goes through the canals is very different. Wasn't aware that with a supboard you can also take a passenger and some boats are actually too wide-shouldered for the canals especially if you are only in it by yourself. But 15 minutes on the shore and you are back up to date in the latest boating fashion.

Photo from September 2009. You won't find the carts with glass washing ladders anymore because they are now banned. One for Weekend/Street Reflections here.

Lost something?

As long as it is expensive enough then auxiliaries can always be hired.

Strange relations

I knew that cormorants sailed with a boat but herons that is the first time for me. Seen the day before yesterday in the "Nieuwe Keizersgracht". (PS Header is a slipway in the harbor of Urk)

Start of the New Year

You used to be able to skate on the canals on New Year's Day. Wonder if we will ever see that again.

Oh it's hot

So hot that even meetings are held in the water. One for Our World Tuesday here.

There is still a lot to do.

With bridges collapsing and quay walls threatening to collapse. For Amsterdam, this means years of poor accessibility and disruption of traffic in the city centre and beyond. Not to mention the cost.

Dangerous position

If you are wondering where all those people are sitting on my header its on the glass roof off the subway entrance in the Weesperstraat. Not designed for it and not safe at all but you get a splendid view from the canal parade in the Nieuwe Herengracht. One for Our World Tuesday here.

Work

Saw yesterday this guy with those funny colored cables on a bridge.
Then I known for sure. Diver which is commissioned by the municipality to visualize the foundations of the quay walls under water. He said he still had 50 km to go. One for Signs, Signs here.
