Festival Italiano Postponed until March 2022

MEDIA RELEASE

Newmarket, Monday 4 October 2021

Newmarket Business Association (NBA) has announced today that Festival Italiano, scheduled to be held in Newmarket on Sunday 7 November, has been postponed until Sunday 20 March 2022.

NBA CEO Mark Knoff-Thomas said “We are disappointed to not be able to hold the Festival in November. But due to changes in COVID alert levels we believe a delay is the most responsible and practical approach. A lot of hard work and planning has already happened and in order to give this signature event some certainty March seems the best solution as this is a more realistic and achievable timeframe for some “normality”. It also allows the authorities time to increase the vaccine uptake across the population, and put robust solutions in place for large-scale events, such as Vaccine Passports

Festival Italiano, New Zealand’s largest Italian street festival, typically attracts over 12,000 attendees, and has been hosted in Newmarket for the past 7 years. The Dante Alighieri Society has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the NBA to manage the event on its behalf.

Knoff-Thomas continues “A representative from the Waitemata Local Board, one of the festival’s major sponsors, was in agreement with the decision. The NBA would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of our sponsors, including major sponsors Waitemata local Board, Peroni, SMEG and Rialto Centre. We look forward to seeing everyone on 20 March 2022.”

Covid case at Freemans Bay Community Centre

Important announcement: Among the locations of interest released by the Ministry of Health today there is the Central Auckland Church of Christ, listed at 52 Hepburn St, Freemans Bay, Auckland, on Sunday 15 August.

Although the confirmed Covid case was at the Church from 10:15am to 12:02pm we still would like to inform all those who attended the Dante Play at 5:30pm on Sunday 15 August that the other members of the Central Auckland Church of Christ finished using the same premises a couple of hours prior to our event, and that some of our staff crossed the same space while members of the Church were still onsite (but not the primary contact, who left a few hours prior). These members of staff got tasted as a precaution and returned negative results.

However, we urge all those who attended the Play on Sunday, and classes at Freemans Bay on Monday and Tuesday, to monitor their health and be aware of any symptoms of Covid-19. Anyone who develops symptoms should stay at home, contact Healthline on 0800 358 5453 and get a test, advises the Ministry of Health.

FESTIVAL ITALIANO AUCKLAND COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT

 COVID-19 ANNOUNCEMENT

To ensure that we adhere to current Ministry of Health guidelines and the New Zealand Events Sector Voluntary Code, Festival Italiano has introduced some new measures for 2020 to keep the public, stall holders, staff and volunteers safe at this year’s event. We ask that all participants (including stall holders and workers):
1. Not attend the Event if you, or an immediate family or household member, are feeling unwell or sick, have confirmed COVID-19 or COVID-19 symptoms, or have been instructed by the relevant authority to self-isolate.
2. Maintain good hygiene practices at all times, including: regular hand washing and sanitisation while at the Festival (foot pedal sanitisers are provided in the area for the public), especially after using the bathroom and before and after handling food; and remember to cover your mouth and nose if you need to cough or sneeze.
3. Download the NZ Covid Tracer App. QR codes will be posted around the streets of the Festival for you to sign in, and hard copy sign-in sheets will be available to all at the Dante Society tent (in the centre of Kent St).
4. Comply with any public health and/or safety directions of event staff, police or health authorities.
5. Be aware of your surroundings and remember to maintain physical distancing wherever possible in the Festival precinct and when queueing for food stalls. The communal seating area has been removed this year to comply with social distancing standards, and the layout of the event has been changed, but nevertheless there may be a crowd, especially at lunch time. We also advise you not to attend with dogs this year. If this is not possible please remember to keep dogs on a leash at all times.
6. There will be free water at the Festival, but we encourage you to bring your own bottle as well.
7. Festival Italiano is working towards Zero Waste so there will be waste educators at each bin station to help the public with recycling and waste disposal. Please help them, and our volunteers, by following their instructions to keep the event clean and safe, and minimise contact.
Grazie

Dante Auckland COVID-19 UPDATE: Cancellations of Italian Classes

Bambini: la scuola Dante è chiusa, per compito state a casa e disegnate tanti arcobaleni, come quello che avete fatto alla Dante con gli insegnanti. Un abbraccio virtuale a tutti! 😊
Children: the Dante school is closed, for homework stay at home and draw many rainbows, like the one you did at the Dante with the teachers. A virtual hug to all! 😊

Dear Students and friends

Due to Council restrictions on the use of public facilities, and the increasing spread of Covid-19 in Auckland and New Zealand, from this week until further notice there will be no more classes in Freemans Bay Community Centre. Online lessons will be available for adult classes only from next week.

All children’s classes, colazione and other events are also cancelled until further notice.

Adult classes: your teachers will contact each class as a group to organise online lessons, in line with the other Dante Schools around the world.

Please keep safe and await your instructions from your teacher or Dante staff member.

We are taking these measures in line with government recommendations, and will work with you to keep the activities and spirit of the Dante going through these challenging times.

Un abbraccio virtuale a tutti,

The Dante Team
