So what can you do in such cases? Well, you take a break for a tasty snack, chat with fellow writers to get to know each other better and ease the tension. Calmly, we then filled the board with notes, names, dates and plots to organise and interweave the storylines.

As everything became clearer, we started working on the dialogue to add more realism and vibrancy to the scenes that were being created. Finally, with a good amount of material in hand, we pushed the seven characters towards the ultimate crisis point of the story, when the threads intertwine, the enemies seem to have the upper hand and everything is on the verge of collapse. To get out of it, this time we've come up with something a little more... Explosive!

You don't think we're going to tell you the ending, do you? You'll have to read our book to find out! And how? As part of the Settimana della Lingua Italiana del Mondo, we'll be celebrating the conclusion of this writing adventure on October 18 at 5.30 pm at the Dante Alighieri Auckland, discussing the Una storia in Italia project and presenting our work!

Trieste, autunno del 1943. La città, cruciale punto strategico durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, finisce sotto l’occupazione tedesca. Le strade, affollate di soldati, sono pervase da un’atmosfera di tensione, paura e difficoltà. Nonostante le operazioni belliche e le restrizioni imposte, al Caffè degli Specchi si può ancora bere un caffè (di cicoria), fare due chiacchiere e respirare. Qui incontriamo Gina, una giovane giornalista con idee sovversive, e Giuseppe, ex ingegnere socialista, ora gestore del bar e di traffici clandestini.

Beh, già questo è inizio promettente. Ma sapete cosa succede quando si scrive una storia tutti insieme? Beh, i protagonisti diventano sette! Ci sono anche Cristina, infermiera, e Giacomo, intellettuale ebreo, uniti da un amore impossibile; i gemelli pescatori di Izola, Giorgio e Vittorio; e Claudia, ricca e viziata ma anche generosa e coraggiosa, figlia degli ex proprietari di niente meno che… la Risiera di San Sabba. 

Per dare vita ai personaggi, iniziamo con un’intervista immaginaria: dove sono nati? Quanti anni hanno? Quale è il loro colore preferito? Che cibo detestano? Per cosa morirebbero? Se la fantasia non basta, il caso ci può dare una mano. Un gioco di scrittura creativa ci aiuta a sceglierne lati positivi e negativi e a scoprirne talenti imprevedibili e peculiarità stranamente assortite A questo punto, siamo pronti a mettere in scena i nostri sette, naturalmente, seguendo la regola d’oro: show, don’t tell! 

Adesso che abbiamo un dove e un chi per la nostra storia, abbiamo bisogno del motore dell’azione. Di cosa si tratta?  Il meccanismo narrativo che movimenta la trama è il “desiderio” del protagonista. Cosa desiderano, più di tutto, i nostri personaggi? E qui iniziano i guai…

 Second Workshop Meeting: The Protagonists

Trieste, autumn 1943. The city, a crucial strategic point during World War II, falls under German occupation. The streets, crowded with soldiers, are filled with an atmosphere of tension, fear and hardship. Despite the war operations and imposed restrictions, at the Caffè degli Specchi, one can still enjoy a chicory coffee, have a chat and breathe. Here we meet Gina, a young journalist with subversive ideas, and Giuseppe, a former socialist engineer now running the bar and clandestine activities.

Well, this is already a promising start. But do you know what happens when writing a story together? The protagonists become seven! There are also Cristina, a nurse, and Giacomo, a Jewish intellectual, united by an impossible love; the twin fishermen from Izola, Giorgio and Vittorio; and Claudia, rich and spoiled but also generous and courageous, daughter of the former owners of none other than… the Risiera di San Sabba.

To bring the characters to life, we start with an imaginary interview: where were they born? How old are they? What is their favorite color? What food do they hate? What would they die for? If imagination isn’t enough, chance can lend a hand. A creative writing exercise helps us choose their positive and negative traits and discover unexpected talents and strangely assorted peculiarities. At this point, we are ready to bring our seven characters to life, following the golden rule: show, don’t tell!

Now that we have a where and a who for our story, we need the driving force of the action. What is it? The narrative mechanism that propels the plot is the protagonist’s desire. What do our characters want more than anything? And here the troubles begin…

Join us for a series of four creative writing classes in Italian, tailored for intermediate to advanced learners. 

In these sessions, we will immerse ourselves in the universe of Italian stories through the reading of literary texts. Guided by engaging storytelling activities, we will explore and experiment with the art of narration.

Each class will offer a chance to analyse and put into practice the key elements of the narrative process, while allowing ample room for creativity and individual writing.

Italy won't merely serve as a literary background but will become the marvellous setting where, together, we will breathe life into our tales.

A surprising finale will beautifully conclude our journey. 

This is a precious opportunity to learn, share, and celebrate the Italian language and the magic of stories in an atmosphere of collaboration and learning.
