A special book presentation about the Italian Resistance with the co-author Giulia Borelli from Italian Time Zone.

Saturday 30 Novembre
10am -12pm
Dante Rooms
Freemans Bay Community Centre
52 Hepburn St
Freemans Bay, Auckland

In this book, the authors Giulia and Lorenzo Borelli invite readers on a heartfelt journey between generations, uncovering the treasured memories of their grandmother and mother, Lanfranca (Franca) Barbaglia. A woman of simple yet profound generosity and courage, Franca lived at the Cevola farmhouse in Invorio, in Piemonte, from 1926 to 1946. With her "light" (lume in the book title), she not only sheltered partisans seeking refuge but also served as a beacon of faith, acting as a catechist and a young women’s delegate in Catholic Action.

This work enriches the literary heritage regarding fascism and the Resistance in the Vergante region, shedding light on key themes:
  • The pivotal role of women in the Italian Resistance;
  • A vivid glimpse into rural life and traditions in the North of Italy;
  • Education and schooling during the fascist era;
  • A description of the Cevola farmhouse and its treasures;
  • Precious documents and testimonies from the Invorio Resistance, focusing on the tragic San Marcello massacre of March 28, 1945.
This is not only a tale of Giulia's family legacy but a compelling piece of collective history, celebrating resilience, memory, and hope.

Giulia Borelli is an Italian teacher, podcaster, and globetrotter dedicated to making Italian history and culture accessible to curious Italian learners.

Unfortunately, the book is no longer distributed in or outside of Italy, but you can purchase a hard copy from the author during the book presentation (subject to availability) or the e-book (pdf.) version here:

COLAZIONE ALLA DANTE CON BRUNO FERRARO

Ciao a tutti, Vi ricordiamo la nostra Colazione, sabato 26 ottobre, a partire dalle 10.

Bruno Ferraro ci parlerà di varie ricorrenze legate al mese di ottobre, tra cui: 6 ottobre : San Bruno Bruno of Cologne (German: Bruno von Köln; Italian Bruno di Colonia; c. 1030 – 6 October 1101), venerated as Saint Bruno, was the founder of the Carthusian Order. He personally founded the order's first two communities. He was a celebrated teacher at Reims, and a close advisor of his former pupil, Pope Urban II. 12 ottobre: 1492 is of enormous significance in Western history: It is the day when explorer Christopher Columbus completed his journey across the Atlantic Ocean and landed in the “New World.” What Columbus actually reached on that October day was an island he named San Salvador that is now part of the Bahamas. "Johan Padan and the Discovery of the Americas" is a one-man play by Dario Fo, recipient of the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature. It is narrated by Johan Padan, a fugitive from the Spanish Inquisition who accompanies Christopher Columbus on his fourth voyage to the New World. Il tutto accompagnato dalle musiche di: Renzo Arbore: America (Orchestra italiana, Musica napoletana Tournée in America, 1992)

How did Italy become a Republic? A special history lesson with Giulia Borelli, from Italian Time Zone

Colazione con Giulia Borelli — How did Italy become a Republic?

Saturday 31 Agosto, 10am-12pm
Dante Rooms, Freemans Bay Community Centre
52 Hepburn St, Freemans Bay

If you are studying Italian and are in love with Italy, you understand how crucial history is to understanding Italian culture and society.

Italy became a unified country in 1861 - at least officially - and it became a Republic less than 100 years ago, in 1946! How did we get there? What happened on June 2nd and 3rd 1946? Why is it important for our modern society?

Giulia Borelli is an Italian teacher, podcaster, and globetrotter dedicated to making Italian history and culture accessible to curious Italian learners. You can listen to her podcast Italian Time Zone to explore Italy and plunge into the Italian language.

In her lesson, Giulia provides a historical overview from the unification of Italy to the birth of the Italian Republic, also discussing little-known facts about well-known cities!

On the same day, from 11am to 12pm, we will also have our Italian book exchange Scambiamoceli. Bring your Italian books and swap with other readers!

Colazione di maggio Anti-Money Laundering 101 (Introduzione all'Anti-Riciclaggio di Denaro)

Special colazione in May, with Dr Giulia Dondoli talking about her work in Anti-Money Laundering

Saturday 25 May, 10am-12pm
Dante Rooms, Freemans Bay Community Centre
52 Hepburn St, Freemans Bay

If you have watched Breaking Bad or Ozark, you will know that criminals need to launder money to enjoy the profit of their crimes. To try and place their dirty money in the legal financial system, criminals use businesses as a vehicle of their transactions.

For these reasons it is very important that businesses are aware of money laundering risks and are alert to red flags that need to be reported to the police. Dr Giulia Dondoli is an anti-money laundering specialist and has spent the past  five years helping businesses in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Island to detect and deter money laundering.

In this presentation, Giulia talks about anti-money laundering, what it means, and how it looks like in practice.

Following August’s talk about Renaissance women poets,
Colazione alla Italian Language School Società Dante Alighieri Auckland questo sabato! Professor Bruno Ferraro will talk about poems of Vittoria Colonna and her friend Michelangelo Buonarroti, who was not only a figurative artist but also a poet.

Motley is the group of women who, for lack of a better term, have been called “Poetesse del Cinquecento” and included courtesans, intellectuals and cortigiane honeste. In a class of her own, we meet Vittoria Colonna, a member of the noble Colonna family of Rome and the wife of an illustrious personage of the times. Vittoria was also a friend of Michelangelo Buonarroti, the great artist but also a poet. Michelangelo left us a collection of poems (more than 300) which highlight his art and his times.

In addition we will also have a book exchange, so feel free to bing your pre-loved books.
All welcome!

Vi aspettiamo! 📚🇮🇹

Colazione and RENAISSANCE WOMEN POETS

Join us for a coffee and a talk with Bruno Ferraro and Matteo Telara:

RENAISSANCE WOMEN POETS
Before Italy was united as the country we know today (1871, with Rome the capital) the cultural and artistic expressions were diverse, following the geographical configuration of the country. As two diametrically opposed representatives of what was known as a “the movement of female poets”; though all influenced by Petrarch’s poetry, both in form and themes, two writers have been selected to highlight variety of themes and conduct of life: Gaspara Stampa and Vittoria Colonna, Michelangelo’s good friend.

Our next Colazione alla Dante will be really special, as we welcome our speaker, architect Riccardo Lucignani, to present the lecture:

I Giardini dei sogni e della fantasia: Il Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo e il Giardino dei Tarocchi

Saturday 27 May

10am-12pm, Dante Rooms, Freemans Bay Community Centre, 52 Hepburn St, Freemans Bay

Gardens of dreams and imagination: The Park of the Monsters, Bomarzo and the Tarot Garden, Capalbio

On May 27th you are invited to a conversation about two beautiful Italian gardens from two different periods that evoke the themes of dreams and fantasy; The Park of the Monsters, created by Vicino Orsini during the second half of 1500 and the Tarot Garden, created by Niki de Saint Phalle in the 1970s. Riccardo will talk in Italian and and Sean Bell will translate in English.
