A message from Italian Ambassador in Wellington Fabrizio Marcelli - Italian National Day 2020 - and a beautiful version of the Italian National Anthem

From the YouTube Channel of the Embassy of Italy in New Zealand

For the first time there will be no celebrations of the national day because of social distancing norms and the grief for the high number of victims related to covid-19. In Wellington the annual reception has been cancelled. Italian Ambassador Fabrizio Marcelli sends out a message of hope and courage for the future of our country. Non dimentichiamoci del nostro meraviglioso Paese nel giorno della sua festa. United we will succeed. Ambassador Fabrizio Marcelli

On the Italian National Day, the Italian Embassy in Wellington asked the Black Spider Stomp Trio to perform a jazz arrangement of the Italian national Anthem. Black Spider Trio is a Gypsy Jazz ensemble born in the heart of Wellington. The talents of these three virtuoso musicians combine to create a highly polished original repertoire featuring blazingly swift swing, deep sultry ballads, old-world waltzes and foot-stomping shuffles. They played packed shows to the Whanganui Jazz club, Taranaki Jazz club, Auckland's Creative Jazz Club as well as many shows around Wellington including well received gigs at Hashigo Zake, The Lido, San Francisco Bathhouse, Meow, Rogue and Vagabond and most recently a sold out show for the 2018 Wellington Jazz fest at The Third Eye. Francesco D’Orazio
was born in Bari and was taught violin and viola by his father. Later he studied with Denes Zsigmondy at the Salzburg Mozarteum and Yair Kless at the Rubin Academy in Tel Aviv. In 2010, the Italian National Music Critics Association awarded him with the Premio Abbiati as “Best Soloist” of the year. With Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI in Turin, he recorded Fire and Blood by Michael Daugherty, Michael Nyman Concerto n.1 and the complete works for violin and orchestra by Ivan Fedele. Mr. D'Orazio has recorded for the most prominent record labels such as Decca, Hyperion and Opus 111/Naive and has performed at such major concert venues as the Berliner Philarmonie, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome), Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall (London), the Teatro Coliseo (Buenos Aires), the Centre de la Musique Baroque in Versailles, the Frick Collection in New York. His large repertoire includes works from early music, as violinist in the original instrument ensemble L'Astrée of Turin, to classic, romantic and contemporary music. He is a favourite of many composers: Luis De Pablo wrote for D’Orazio his last violin work, “Per Violino” and for many years D'Orazio worked with Luciano Berio.

Giampaolo Nuti
was born in Florence, where he studied piano with the late Antonio Bacchelli at the “L. Cherubini” Conservatory of Music, graduating with honours in both piano and harpsichord. First prize winner in many piano competitions, he has appeared as a soloist with many symphony and chamber orchestras, working with Topilow, Yaslicam, Chen, Samale, Gutter, Kawka, performing Concertos ranging from Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven to Liszt, Alkan, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Schnittke in Italy, Austria, United States and Mexico. He has recorded with Decca and Stradivarius. Nuti has been the winner of the State Competition for teaching positions; he is presently teaching piano at the “A. Boito” Conservatory of Music in Parma, while regularly holding master classes for various academies in Italy. Mr. Nuti’s solo repertoire covers a vast part of piano literature; he also focuses his attention on monographic recitals, like the ones dedicated to Alkan’s music, the north-american composers or the complete Shostakovich Preludes and Fugues; he also endeavours to explore new forms of recitals, seeking to attain a more engaging experience for the audience.

Festa della Repubblica concert with Maestro Christian Leotta

Christian Leotta is a native of Catania, Italy, and now lives in Como. He studied with Mario Patuzzi at Milan’s Conservatory, at the Theo Lieven International Piano Foundation on Lake Como and at the Tureck Bach Research Foundation of Oxford, England.

Appearing in Montreal in 2002, at the age of only 22, Leotta is the youngest pianist since the youthful Daniel Barenboim ever to undertake a recital series encompassing the entire corpus of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas. Following the extraordinary success of his live performances, in 2007 Atma Classique signed him to record the entire corpus of the 32 Piano Sonatas in a collection of five two-CD sets, released between 2008 and 2014.

The international press hailed him as "one of the major Beethoven soloists of our time" (Pizzicato, Luxembourg). His affinity to Beethoven's music has been unanimously recognized thanks to "his prodigious technique used to better express the poetry of Beethoven’s music" (The Whole Note, Toronto).

Christian Leotta has worked with major orchestras such as the Münchner Philharmoniker, the Wiener Kammerorchester, the Italian RAI National Television Orchestra, the Milan Symphony Orchestra “Giuseppe Verdi”, regularly performing in important theatres and concert halls world-wide.

Below some photos of the Italian reception after the concert, with Prosecco San Leo, Birra Peroni, Parmigiano Reggiano and Prosciutto di Parma. Thank you to the Italian Embassy and Ambassador Carmelo Barbarello for a wonderful evening.
